CARANA has quantified how cumbersome transport and logistics (T&L) systems obstruct the path to economic development, undermining a country’s competitiveness by adding time and money to the movement of goods across borders to international buyers. In general, goods shipped from developing countries face transaction costs two to three times higher than corresponding costs in developed countries and account for as much as three times the average tariff rate. Through analyses of diverse T&L systems on four continents, CARANA has cultivated recognized expertise in this crucial barrier by collecting (often sensitive) data along industry value chains and prioritizing the most expensive obstacles for policy reformers and businesses. In 2006, we unveiled a tool that calculates the dollar value of each step in the process of handling and shipping various products from primary producers to final buyers, identifies inefficiencies and excess transaction costs, and highlights the quickest and most cost-effective solutions. Leading T&L projects include: USAID Trade Enhancement for the Services Sector (TESS) Project USAID Bulgaria Labor Market Project (LMP)
